Create a controlled soft edge without producing unwanted halos. This guide is written for Windows 11 and supported Windows 10 installations and separates this task from broader download, feature, and troubleshooting topics.
Layer-based work should preserve both visible output and editing intent. Names such as “portrait cleanup” or “background mask” are more useful than “Layer copy #4.” Periodically save a numbered XCF checkpoint before merging, flattening, or converting content. Export formats are delivery copies; they should not replace the layered master when future changes are likely.
The most reliable starting point for selection feathering is an untouched project copy and a clear record of the current GIMP version. Save an XCF master before changing preferences, plug-ins, profiles, or source pixels. feather radius should reflect output size. If a menu label differs from the steps below, consult the documentation for the major version you actually have installed rather than forcing a step written for another release.
A technically successful operation is not always a good visual result. Compare the edited copy against the source, check important edges on more than one background when transparency is involved, and inspect representative detail at actual pixels. The output should meet the intended dimensions without introducing halos, repeated texture, clipped tones, or unexpected color shifts.
For repeatable work, write down the relevant values instead of relying on memory. This is particularly useful when several images must look consistent. Avoid treating a single preset as universal: document size, source quality, subject edges, display scaling, and the GIMP major version can all change the correct choice.
First confirm that the correct layer, mask, channel, or input device is active. Undo the last operation and repeat it on a small test area. If the problem persists in a new blank document, note the exact steps and temporarily disable third-party plug-ins or custom resources related to the behavior. For installation or startup failures, use a profile-isolation test rather than deleting the existing profile.
When asking for help, include the GIMP version, Windows version, processor architecture, the exact error text, and whether the issue also occurs in a new document. This information is more useful than a general statement that the program “does not work.”
This article was checked against hands-on Windows workflows and the primary resources below. Product behavior can change between releases, so exact version claims should be verified before a major upgrade.
